It is incredibly rare for performers to have the opportunity to work with real living composers. Being part of the compositional process gives the performer great insight into how music is constructed, and this in turn greatly increases confidence when asked for a personal interpretation of the music being performed or listened to. There are also very few opportunities for composers to have their works played by real musicians. To this end, WAYACHAMP has created the Compose! Program to encourage the creation of new string music and foster the relationship between composer and performer. Young artists (aged between 10 - 17 years) are invited to submit their own string quartet compositions. Depending on durations and difficulty level, one or two compositions will be chosen to be workshopped and performed during the WAYACHAMP Program by students and tutors.Â
Compositions are to be scored for either of the following combinations - two violins, viola and cello / two violins and cello / 4 violins / 4 cellos / piano quintet / piano quartet / piano trio. It is suggested that compositions be between 2 and 5 minutes duration and each individual part be no harder than Grade 7 level.Â
While WAYACHAMP participants are strongly encouraged to apply, applicants do not have to be participants of WAYACHAMP.
There is no cost to apply.Â
