What is it?

Four days (metro)/Two days (regional) of chamber music under the guidance of Australia's best chamber musicians.

How does it work?

Students experience tutorials and rehearsals with two small ensembles, chamber orchestra and fun and informative workshops each day. Pieces rehearsed during the week are performed at a Final Concert on the last evening.

Students receive their music 3 to 4 weeks in advance so that they can feel fully prepared for playing in their ensembles.

Students may attend as individuals or with a pre-formed group, however applications must be submitted individually.

Who is it for?

Open to students aged 9 - 17 of the instruments below:

  • Violin, viola or cello students who are equivalent to AMEB Grade 1 or have been having lessons for at least 2 years

  • Piano students equivalent to at least AMEB Grade 6 - metro venues only

  • Flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon or French horn students - metro venues only. 1 to 2 places available for each instrument - determined by video audition.

Audition procedure:

String and piano participants will be required to submit a video of themselves playing a set excerpt and a chosen piece. This assists with placing students in ensembles. Students will be placed in one of two streams according to their age/level:

  • Masters stream - students under 13 and/or up to grade 6 level

  • Elite stream - students 13 or older and/or grade 6 and above (places in the Elite stream are limited and numbers may vary each Academy)

Students applying for the woodwind quintet places are required to submit a video of themselves playing 1 minute of a chosen piece. From this, selected students will be invited to register for the Academy with a unique code following the closing date. Students applying for the woodwind quintet places can submit their application here.

NB. The organisation of students into streams is dependent on numbers of participants and is at the discretion of the Director.

EXCERPTS

Academy Students are required to record the set excerpts below, plus 1 minute of a piece of their own choice, due by the closing date. (Files will be linked below 2 weeks before the closing date.)

Click on your instrument to download your set excerpt:

Violin excerpts

Viola excerpts

Cello excerpts

Your recordings help us to determine:

  1. Which stream you will be in (Elite or Masters)

  2. Which other students are a similar level to you so we can put you together in a group

  3. The most appropriate level repertoire for you and your ensemble

  4. Seating in the orchestra

It is important to try and reflect your best playing in these videos. It is better to play an easier excerpt well, including dynamics, expression and tempos as marked, than a harder excerpt less well.

  • Please record the student in VIDEO (phone videos are acceptable) - make sure we can see you!

  • You are to make 2 recordings - one of the set excerpt and one of your own choice piece (1 minute).

  • Please send your 2 videos to info@wayachamp.com either attached directly or linked to a cloud-based sharing platform (dropbox, google drive etc), or via WhatsApp to 0410708612
