Sophie Curtis - WAYACHAMP Founder/Director
Sophie Curtis is in high demand in Western Australia as soloist, chamber musician, orchestral section leader, recording artist and educator. She enjoys a varied freelance career which includes regular performances as Principal Cellist of the Perth Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and Darwin Symphony Orchestra. Sophie is founding director of the WA Young Artists Chamber Music Program (WAYACHAMP) which since 2011 has fostered the development of over 500 young Western Australian musicians. She is a chamber music tutor at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). She administrates and performs with the Sartory String Quartet, a classical concert based ensemble which she co-founded in 2003, is a regular guest soloist with Freeze Frame Opera and performs baroque cello with Australian Baroque.
Sophie completed her Bachelor of Music with First class Honours at the University of Western Australia under Dr Suzanne Wijsman. Together with her piano trio, Sophie accepted a Fellowship to study at the Norfolk Summer School of Music run by Yale University. The following year Sophie chose to focus on historical performance practise and after a short period of study in Europe, she went on to complete her Master of Music degree in Baroque Cello at UWA.
Highlights in Sophie’s career have included performing concerti with the Perth Symphony Orchestra, Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and Western Australian Youth Orchestra, touring Europe with the Western Australian Youth Orchestra, performing Peter Sculthorpe’s ‘Requiem for cello alone’ for the composer, engaging in a two month residency (based in regional VIC/NSW) performing and touring with the Sartory String Quartet, performing at the Blackwood River Chamber Music Festival in Bridgetown WA, performing in the Perth seasons of ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and ‘Mary Poppins’, performing in the Perth International Arts Festival and performing and touring to hundreds of schools across Australia as part of the Musica Viva In Schools Program (between 2004 and 2015). Sophie also enjoys performing in a contemporary setting, accompanying the likes of Michael Buble, Harry Connick Jnr, Diana Krall, and in the orchestra of film composer Hans Zimmer. She enjoys arranging and recording string parts for local singer/song-writer artists.
